An Encyclopedia covers knowledge or branches of knowledge in a comprehensive, but summary fashion. Encyclopedias contain a vast amount of information arranged alphabetically. The book or set of books is intended to be read in sections but rarely from beginning to end. Here selections scanned from the first edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica from 1771 were layered and etched onto a lasercut plexiglass plate. The plate was printed and scanned again. The resulting image was enlarged and digitally printed onto a yard of fabric. It folds down into a 8” x 10” mylar envelope. Produced by Shift-lab member Denise Bookwalter.
